Early this summer I had the pleasure of interviewing MeiMei Fox on her 40:20 Vision…to live The Life Out Loud. She embodies the spirit and strength that often gains full-steam by our forties and that 40:20 Vision aims to give 20-somethings a head start on:
“There is no question about the grounding and self-knowledge that I have now. I loved my 20s… all the privilege and freedom of being an adult but very little of the responsibility. But I didn’t have the sense of self that I have now. I didn’t know who I was or what I wanted and I felt at the mercy of outside forces in my life. I had no grounding in yoga, meditation and spirituality…all of the things that I turn to now.
It’s this self-confidence that helps her “fear less and live more” as her mantra goes. And what gave her the courage to share the journey of her decision to freeze her eggs on her Huffington Post blog which you can read here: Freezing My Eggs.
This post is part three of a five part series that chronicles the process she went through. Her personal and honest journal takes some of the fear of the unknown out of “oocyte cryopreservation” for those considering it and raises awareness of the option for other women her age.
MeiMei also shares her wish for 20-somethings with me to think about their fertility options well before their 40s:
“I’d definitely encourage women interested in having kids to think about the whole fertility situation before they turn 40. I think it’s a big mistake not to. You think you have all the time in the world, especially if you look and feel younger than you are, but your eggs know your age, and your chances of conceiving a healthy child after age 35 really start to slip. That’s why I froze my eggs at 37. It’s better to do it even younger if you can afford it and think you might want to wait to have kids. Freeze ’em young!”
