What three “gifts” would you give a 20-something if you were a “Forty-Godmother”? Here 40-somethings share three wishes to help a 20-something get a head start on the confidence to make decisions that are right for themselves. No more woulda, coulda, shoulda.
1. Hold yourself up to standards but make them your standards.
2. Stress is not a virtue or a sign of working hard. It is something that if you don’t control will come to be a detriment. Figure out your way to de-stress and give yourself permission to not do it all.
3. The best way to avoid disappointment is to set up expectations ahead of time. When someone let’s you down, don’t immediately go the angry and accusatory route. First calmly ask what happened or what is going on with the person who disappointed you. It can change the conversation when instead of reacting to the negative outcome you get to the sources of the breakdown first.
