Every time I interview a 40-something woman for 40:20 Vision I ask them what 3 “gifts” would they give a 20-something if they were a “Forty-Godmother”. Here are one woman’s gifts:
1.
Start financial planning in their twenties. You need that whether you’re married or single or whatever. It makes you a strong woman, a strong couple. I wish I had bought a house. I remember in my twenties going “No, I don’t want to be locked down. I don’t want it! I don’t want it!” Now I’m like “what was I thinking?” I could’ve had a house here.
2.
Keep your skills set and take time for yourself. You’ve got to keep yourself in the game. You never want to lose that edge. You’ll never know what is going to happen tomorrow. If you are a couple, you have to figure out a way to keep moving independently and be together.
3.
You can make mistakes. I made a couple of career mistakes along the way. Now I call deep learning experiences or detours. If I look back now I wish I had made some more of those detours.
