Three Gifts for a 20-Something (56)

Herewith, three “gifts” one 40-something woman would give a 20-something if she were a “Forty-Godmother”. What are yours?

A backpack and $1000 bucks. Travel before you settle down with a partner or a job that you feel you can’t leave. Then you go into the world with open eyes. Say to yourself, “There is a world outside the bubble I live in and I’m going to go learn”. Go see the world and then go get it. There are ways to do it without a ton of money.

Do something athletic or challenging. That really helps build confidence.  I know surfing has really helped me overcome fears and challenges. I didn’t learn surfing until I was 32 and now I’m obsessed with it. The waves could be 6 feet or 10 feet or 2 feet and they’re terrifying but then you do it. I guess it’s a life or death thing but it helps immensely with confidence.

Don’t wait. If you want to do something, don’t let excuses or other people get in the way of you doing it. Don’t wait for a partner to invest in art, furniture or a house or anything. Develop your own style and interests. Don’t wait to learn learn about cooking or a language or whatever interests you…take a class.
