Herewith, three “gifts” one 40-something would give a 20-something as their “Forty-Godmother”. What are yours?
1.
To be okay with not knowing. You don’t have to decide what you are going to do for life in your 20s. You don’t’ have to. If you know you do want to be a doctor and you have that clarity then you should follow that. But for the 89% who don’t have that kind of clarity, it’s okay.
2.
To know how important money is to you. At the same time you should know what your values about money are (or at least think about them in your twenties). There are two ways to go. Have a career that makes money so you can do what you want (and risk delaying some things) or have a career that you love that maybe ends up making you money or maybe it just affords you to do what you want. Try to suss out who you are earlier than later. Both of them are still about striving. It’s never wrong to strive.
3.
Do yoga. I know everyone says that. But do something. It’s always important to take care of yourself at every level. You can’t cheat death but you can certainly try.
