You Have to Respect How People See You

“You have to respect the way people see you.”

Yesterday I interviewed a woman who had to prove to the IRS that she didn’t know her lifestyle was being funded by her husband stealing from the IRS. Carol Joynt, author of The Innocent Spouse ) made this comment about the fact that the IRS agent could make all sorts of assumptions about her lifestyle and her values simply by virtue of what she could see…her house, articles about her in the paper, her job, etc. She didn’t agree with the assumptions that she led a extravagant lifestyle but she could not  change the agent’s perception and had to respect it came from her frame of reference. It goes to say, be careful what you put on out there, be it on Facebook, Twitter or text, because that is how people are going to see you.
