3 Gifts For A 20-Something – Leave When You Leave

What three “gifts” would you give a 20-something if you were a “Forty-Godmother”? Here 40-somethings share three wishes to help a 20-something get a head start on the confidence to make decisions that are right for themselves. No more woulda, coulda, shoulda.

1. You deserve more. Don’t sell yourself short.

I used to not take myself seriously enough as an employee or as a potential partner. I doubted that I was worthy of someone else’s love or attention. I wasn’t walking around hating myself…but I didn’t see what others could see in me. You have to see yourself. Why wouldn’t someone be attracted to you or need you? You are a young adult. You have made it this far —  you have to have some beautiful things about you. It is only now looking back that I actually see what others did see in me! I was damn good back then…oh what I would have accomplished or who would I be with if I seen it!

2. If someone doesn’t see your strengths, move on.  Leaving a job that is not right for you can be an opportunity to find the place that values your skills and strengths. It’s not the end of the world, it is a new beginning.

3. Navigate your relationships with integrity and get rid of the baggage. Don’t burn bridges when you leave…but leave when you leave! Don’t stay tied to people out of guilt or expectations.
