Three Gifts for a 20-Something

shutterstock_255404074What three “gifts” would you give a 20-something if you were a “Forty-Godmother”?  40-something women share three things to help a 20-something get a head start on the confidence to make decisions that are right for themselves. No more woulda, coulda, shoulda.

1.  Try to balance the long-term and short-term when it comes to relationships. When I was young I subconsciously ticked off my list — is he my type, do we hang well with my friends, do I like how he dresses, do I like his family? Those questions can be asked but also ask more. Can I see us growing old with the ability to be best friends? Can we have passion — and have things we love to do together whether it be socializing or sport — and still pursue our own interests? Do we want kids and how will we hang to gather as a family? How do we define family?

2. When you first realize you are pretending is the time to leave….a relationship, a friendship or even a job. It only gets harder the longer you wait.

3. It is much better to under-promise and over-deliver. Disappointment is the wheel of relationship breakdowns both at home and at work.
