3 Gifts for a 20-Something (151)

Taking a slightly different tack with this week’s 3 Wishes for a 20-something. Herewith,  3 gifts to give a 20-something to get through the 20s with more confidence …straight from the red carpet…and Oscar accepetance speeches.

1. Learn how to accept an award. Jared Leto was gracious, grateful and inspiring. He thanked  the family who inspired him., spoke about what the award meant to him and connected it to a larger cause….and then the usual industry and colleague thanks. Think of it as the my world, our world and the world approach to accepting awards.

2. Be true to yourself. Matthew McConaughy’s “mcconnaisance” has brought him back more meaningful work…but he has never veered from his philosophy of life.”

“Alright, Alright, Alright”

“The older you get, the more rules they’re gonna try to get you to follow. You just gotta keep livin’, man, L-I-V-I-N.”

Despite his wacky speeches and naked drumming, he stays true what he thinks and wants to do vs. being driven by what others think. I can’t help but mention that he also shows that it’s never too late to reflect, take stock and recalibrate or course correct your dreams.

3. Be the change you want to see. Talking about the gender bias in the film world helps promote change. Cate Blanchett didn’t ignore the issue, helping to pave the way for more women in her wake.

“Films with a female at the center are niche experiences,” the truth is that “audiences want to see them, and they earn money — the world is round, people!”

And a bonus…loved  Lupito Nyong’o emotional and heartfelt speech – delivered with humility. Similar to Leto she touched on “The me, the we and the our.” And in what was a theme of the evening reminded us…DREAM!
